Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Choi began dancing after high school. After graduating from high school early in 1997 he was immediatedly beckoned by the call from the Lindy Hop and Swing Revival. College called too, so while studying painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Michael continued to dance, picking up other styles along the way; breakdancing (painfully), Hustle, West Coast Swing, and Argentine Tango. It was in Chicago that Michael first began to compete as a Pro-Am student and then as an Open Amateur competitor in Standard and Latin. After college, he moved to New York to pursue his dancing professionally. In New York a whole array of opportunities for training and development opened up. Michael now teaches people from all walks of life, from actors like Donna Mitchell and Nicole Kidman, to Broadway choreographers like Mercedes Ellington and people with more prosaic professions. He is forever grateful to his mentors in dance; Charlotte Jorgensen, who raised him in Standard, Allan Tornsberg and Vibeke Toft for Latin, and Tony Meredith as an artistic and choreographic role-model. |
